“About the UK Coal Forum
The Government will convene a coal forum to bring together coal-fired generators, coal producers and suppliers, power plant suppliers, trade unions, small businesses and other parties in order to help them to find solutions to secure the long-term future of coal-fired power generation and UK coal production.”
“The Coal Forum is a body set up as an arena where important issues facing the industry can be discussed, with Government participation, in an open manner.
The Forum consists of an independent chairman and senior representatives from the coal mining industry, electricity generators, unions, equipment suppliers, others involved in the industry, and Government, including the Devolved Administrations. Membership is by invitation only and is on a personal basis. “

New Crofton Co-op Colliery Project discussed at UK Coal Forum
Wednesday 10February 2016
“3.8. Alan Bilton provided an update on opening a new drift mine at New Crofton Colliery.
When this colliery is up and running it will produce 200 – 300k tonnes of coal a year. “

New Crofton Co-op Colliery Project
“The New Crofton Co-op Colliery project is in the process of opening a new drift coal mine just to the south of New Crofton.”
“Given the challenging state of the UK coal market at the moment we have decided to delay driving the drifts until Summer 2016, but have now begun surface site preparation work.”
Proposal Lodged

"a shallow drift mine about 500 ft (150m) deep owned and run by its members.
finance for the venture would be raised against the value of coal below the ground - estimated to be about £300m.
the new mine, adjacent to the main Wakefield to Doncaster railway line, will be in production by the end of 2015.
The co-operative has pledged to give £10m of funds to the local community over the mine's working life of about 17 years."

“Coal remains the dominant fuel for power generation in the UK, providing 41% of its electricity in 2013”
“since 2006, more coal in the UK has been produced from opencast mining than from deep mines.”
“The underground drift mine near Wakefield in West Yorkshire will recover up to 4.9 million t of coal over a 20-year period, employing 50 people in a workers’ co-operative.”
“approximately 85% of the coal to coal-fired power plants, with the remaining 15% dispatched by road for domestic fuel and the steam heritage market. “
“extract coal from four of the Sharlston seams of the Middle Coal Measures in the Upper Carboniferous. The seams range in thickness from 0.7 to 1.6 m and some are split into two or more leaves. “
“operate within fault-bounded blocks,”
“Coal recovery will be by room-and-pillar method (below), using a low height continuous miner and other equipment. The pillars will be 10 m2, while the roadways will be 6 m wide. This allows a theoretical recovery of around 63%, but the recoverable reserves have been estimated at 55%, to take account of losses and reduced extraction in certain areas. A twin-arm roof bolter will insert roof bolts to ensure the integrity of the roof and prevent spalling.”
