Hi, I've just seen a copy of my great-great grandfather's will. He died in 1855 and left some land in Gomersal containing a coal bed. I believe Gomersal Colliery didn't actually open as a mine until 1911. Can anyone tell me who first opened the mine? How many mines were there in Gomersal? Can any one tell me where I might find out more about the early history of the mine? Thanks in anticipation

Thanks in anticipation Jenny North Yorks It would seem that the Gomersal area had dozens of recorded coal mines and probably even more that weren’t recorded going back to the 1300s. The one Gomersal Main (A.K.A. Nutter’s Lane) that you refer to, was probably sunk by The Birkenshaw Collieries Co., sinking starting in 1911 but officialy opened in 1916. One of many Gomersal Main Collieries is listed as being worked from 1854 to 1867, numerous others are listed here; www.nmrs.org.uk/resources/NMRSMinesofCoal1854.pdfI might well wrong in this,I usually am but at least it might help in initiating your own research, good luck.
