Hi I have just acquired in auction a really nice well made Desk top pen holder in auction, it's an aluminium base with a large block of aluminium on it the block is 8"x2"x2" chamfered on all edges it has two pens in it and two beautiful aluminium topped brass miners lamps, one on each corner The inlaid elongated oval brass plate reads
TO BARRY FROM FRIENDS AT MONK BRETTON E T C BARNSLEY AREA My questions are Who was Barry and what year would this have been made, did you make these for training officers every year ,or was Barry retiring ? The engineering on this is first class, and I would love to find out more about Barry On a sad note I bought this in auction in Staffordshire, also in the auction were 80 miners lamps and a few mining related items which I assume came from a house clearance,of a departed miner Items like these need to be noted & logged for future generations so any info would be really appreciated Thanks in advance chaps

i did my practical training at Monk Bretton Training Centre and seem to recall a senior instructor was called Barry when i was there he would have been arround 60 so may well have been given this when he retired.
We did BJD Magnamatic and AB16 with him from memory
If it is the same Barry he once gave us a test to do as 3 rd apprentices, he advised it was against the clock, but that we must read through it first to ensure we answered in line with the rules of the test, however we all rushed to answer all the questions only to discover that the last question told you not to fill in the test paper. He found it really funny and said he had done it to learn us that you had to read everything first.
It may not be him, but its the only Barry i can recall, does it indicate a year ?
The Barnsley Area was formed after a restructure but i cannot remeber the year that happend

Thanks for your reply ,I really appreciate the information .He must have been well respected ,for the students to make him such a fantastic gift I would love to hear from someone who actually worked on this desk ornament, and get the story behind it But as I said I really appreciate your response
If somebody can tell me how , I will upload a photograph of it.

The only way to post images on here is by "embedding" them, you'll need to open a free account with a photo repository like Photobucket or Flickr, upload your photos there and then C&P the "IMG" code to a post here.

Monk Bretton as a working colliery closed in 1968, it was some time after that the Training Centre was opened possibly around 1971. The senior instructor during 79-82 period responsible for mechanical aspects was a guy named Gerry (Trotman or Troutam?)

Hi John , I am totally useless with computers & have no idea what most of that means lol It's not hard Andy, I'm self taught with computers, but if you want to post photos here, you cannot do it from your own hard drive, the reason being, hosts don't like taking risks with a virus that can destroy their servers. So open a Photobucket account, it's free!
Then on Photobucket, you click on "upload photo/s" It will open a window of your computer files, locate the photo you want to upload, just follow the instructions. Once uploaded you can click on it and it brings a larger version of the photo instead of the "thumbprint" At the right side of the photo are four different "codes" you need the bottom one, "img" which is html code for "image" Basically a live picture link to where the photo is stored, at Photobucket. To select the code, move your mouse pointer/curser over the "img code" and left click on it, it will say "copied". Open a post window here, as if you are going to post a message, move your mouse pointer/curser on the post window as you would if you are ready to type a message, right click your mouse, a drop down box appears, select "paste" and the "img" code appears in the post. That's it!! Then hit create post, once done your "img" code will appear as a photo. Practice, you cannot hurt the site!

Another trick I learned years ago on forums, if you're uncertain of how to do something, find another persons post that has you thinking "how did he do that", and click on quote, you will then see html code, ie bold font has b in brackets, photos have img in brackets, I won't type them as are because it will cause errors in my post. But it will help you work out how the person posted certain things.
