Dear All, I'm trying to find some information about my Grandfather who was a Pit Manager at Firbeck and Orgreave Collieries during the 1950's, 60' until he died in 1978. His name was Eric Cownley. I believe he was also responsible for some other pits but have no ides where to look! My grandmother recently past away at the young age of 95, taking with her all the memories, and now I'd like to create a short biography of Eric's life for my kids; but can only find snippets of info on the web about his work in the pits. Any guidance would be much appreciated! Archives, databases, public records etc..?? Marc Shaw

I suspect Eric Cownley was known to me as my Uncle Eric. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Cownley. As a child, I visited the Cownleys at Shireoaks where I believe Eric was colliety manager. The house was in a rural area and Eric possessed 22 rifle. We used to try to shoot holes through pennies propped up on a wooden fence! My fatherr, Harold Duckenfield worked at Orgreave before moving to the Lancashire coalfield in about 1947. He was colliery manager at Cronton near St Helens. We also visited my grandmother's brother Byron Cownley and his wife Minnie who lived in Beighton - probably two daughters, one called Miriam. Lovely people. Best wishes. Richard Duckenfield.
