Look`s like it John, and according to some it was us moderator`s fault for not stopping it get out of hand,
It seem`s the Modern Mining thread has upset a few,i have read it and re-read it several times, and i still fail to see where it got personal or disrespective, other than raising valid points that the OP did`nt seem to like to hear. Maybe i was to rough around the edge`s to be a moderator, but sensitive Collier`s i have never met.

I've moderated a couple of sites for others, still moderate on a large site, that's the last site I moderate for anyone else.
Pity about the Welsh site, but I do recall John passing a warning out months back.
It's easy to lose control, we don't have "body language" so sometimes a "wrong" word can lead to an argument that wouldn't occur in real life.

To be honest i did`nt find it hard to moderate at all,but i have a good sense of humour,it helped when you worked underground, lol, sadly lacked by some contributors.
Yes,John did give a warning about getting personal or being disrespectful, but like i posted on that thread, where does it get personal or disrespectful,i fail to see it, Maybe with your greater experience of moderating you could have a read of the last 2 pages and point out to me where it get`s personal or disrespectful,as far as i was concerned they were valid points that added to the debate.
I don`t believe control was lost at all, just John got a belly full of complaints from people, and from my spell of moderating on the forum, mainly from people that don`t post very often or not at all, I will say i was surprised by the last 3 contributors to that thread,as i honestly thought better of them, but hey that`s life.
If the forum does`nt start back, you will have to have a screening program in place ready for the emigration of Welsh Miner`s,lol.

TBH Jim, I've been very surprised how polite our members here have been, most are what we used to call "hairy arsed miners", and behaved a lot better than I expected ten years ago when I started this site.
The only time I have had to use the Admin approval of of new registrations was when we got Chinese spammers assault the site with thread after thread of commercial advertising!
I did see a couple of indiscretions on the thread you mentioned, like I said earlier, we don't see body language, so sometimes it's hard to say whether it's a dig in the ribs or a serious comment.
I'm luckier than most posters, I've worked both for the NCB and private mining corporations, plus worked other minerals and been privileged to work on state of the art equipment in my time. So I do see everything in a different perspective most of the time. I will give the NCB some praise though, they gave me the finest training in the world, but as a late friend of mine once said, "The NCB made us lazy". Ironically though, I didn't find a deal of difference in private enterprise regarding "what do you do, when your job is to keep the equipment running when you don't have a breakdown??" At Boulby I walked my district several times a shift, At Wongawilli in Oz, I sat close to the face and did something we were under orders not to do, drove a shuttlecar to keep bonus high, same at Angus Place, took turns driving the shearer, or advancing roof supports. Any of that during my time with the NCB would have got me fined. Odd world.

Don't understand how you would be fined for driving m/c's, John. I was always brought up to know the m/c's I worked with & responsible for. I drove trepaners, shearer's, doscos, & other m/c's so I could get the "feel" of them. Came in handy especially when I was mech/el. Would very often drive a m/c so the driver could do something else for a short while. Didn't broadcast it for obvious reasons. When I was on the tools, used to get "toffee money" off the "team."

Because we weren't authorized to operate ANY machine, except for maintenance purposes ONLY, Mick.
When I first started at Angus Place in Oz, I like all new starters was on "Dog Watch" aka nightshift regular, some of the fitters together with the longwall miners started cutting coal after all maintenance had been completed. Sometime around 5-00am. Word got back to the Manager, he promptly had them all in the office and asked them to explain themselves. Fitters were told to stop operating the shearer for production PERIOD!! and told them they were neither trained nor authorized to operate the machine for production. Miners were told none of them had been trained to operate any face machines and until they had been trained and authorized, they were not to operate machines.
I can see where he was coming from, as he carried all responsibility for all of our safety.
Mind, when I went down to swing shift, I soon learned from the skilled shearer drivers how to cut coal...LOL We split into two small teams at crib time, (snap time) and kept cutting through crib and the ten minute "smoko" break...No they didn't smoke underground, just the name for tea breaks down under. So we made an extra 40 minutes of production on our shift.
Way back when I was at Clifton, I was working on the old power loading agreement faces. We had an early shift, 5-00am, set of miners start, to start cutting coal early. So a couple of lads had a word with them, would you object if we started cutting at five, and when you arrive take over...They slipped the lads a few quid every week for getting that early start. Although the early shift started at 5-00am, it was nearly 6 by the time they got to the faces. Not sure how he found out, but the Manager put a stop to it as soon as it came to his attention. His argument was safety and none of the fellers was authorized to operate face machinery for production.. And that was a pretty easy going, turn a blind eye pit Mick.
Again, authorizations, when I was at one of BG's gypsum mines, I was authorized to drive the landrovers, but NOT to carry men for the purpose of manriding. Drill rigs, scooptrams and new manrider, I was authorized to drive for maintenance purposes only.
One dayshift, I'd jumped on the back of a Landrover, when the mine foreman shouted me and asked me if I'd drive the manrider and leave it at the inbye workshops. I sat myself in the drivers seat, and a couple of fellers asked me if I was authorized..."Nope"..They got out, and I drove it in empty. About an hour or two after I'd been in the workshops, mine foremen slapped some papers in my hand for signing. Authorizations for the manrider, and manriding with the Landrovers, plus a copy of the transport rules.
