"We're using tungsten carbide drills in the preliminary coal face scouring operations!" Never heard it called that before. Could a shearer or treppaner be called a scourer? Doesn't quite sound right does it? BTW used to love Monty Python, just suits my weird & twisted sense of humour..

There was one machine used fairly extensively to open up (thurl) relatively thin seam longwalls and occasionally to prepare stable holes in the Barnsley Area, the operational style of which could well be described as scouring, that was the Dosco Inseam Miner, maybe "our Ken" operated one of those in the preliminary function of opening a coal face.
