Just been watching underground Britain: First story was about Boulby Potash, very interesting, seems strange to see Land Rovers down a pit. They went to a face under the sea to show us a Dosco machine working, then to the dark matter detector. some of my favourite subjects: Mining, quantum physics & astronomy. Sue thinks I'm a super-nerd..

Toyota Landcruisers were used at Renison Bell tin mine and we used Landrovers at British Gypsum. I borrowed a brand new LR one night to run outside to service a breakdown, rules were 4WD low range up the drift, it was winter and since we'd started the shift, ice had formed at the top of the drift, I never saw it and skidded into the belt structure.. Scary few minutes extricating myself without damaging anything. I got the breakdown fixed and set off , stopped at the top of the drift, checked for dings and checked the drift belt for alignment, all was well. Reported the ice to the mine foreman who took off to salt the top of the drift.
Back to Boulby, before I left they had some 4wd trucks modified for manriding, damned if I can recall what make they were now, they also had diesel forklifts in No2 pitbottom to offload skips from the cage. Also modified tractors to haul trailer loads of supplies inbye.
First faces were on the east side of the mine, I'm sure we were under the North Sea before the East District finished. From what I gather, they are working North. When I started in 75, you could only walk a couple of pillars into the north side, east about two hundred yards, south about the same, west up the drift from No2 shaft about 100 yards at the most. It was a long way to the South side when I left, that was the main working faces, all to the dip, roads were like ice in places due to polished salt.

Joy Mining used to make a range of diesel engine underground vehicles for everything from manriding to hauling product and materials, they even made some specials over the years such as fork lift and crane variants.

Garry used to be the winding engine electrician in the early years, I was one of the U/G shift electricians in the early years, finishing up as shaft and ore handling electrician on C shift before migrating to Oz in 79. Spent many a "happy" hour in the tower and at the bottom tipping level changing out magnetic proximity switches etc..

Just been watching another program about underground Britain, this time on BBC1. It was much like the channel 5 one. It featured the Caphouse mine museum & Boulby potash, it showed us a proper potash working face, channel 5 didn't show us that. It also featured the dark matter detector. Also showed us fatburg's in sewers, caves, London underground & tree roots. Not a bad program, but I think they stole the idea off channel 5..
