This IS a true story, although it couldn't have had a very happy ending for the subject...
Bill (I won't mention his surname, and anyway, I think the old lad is no longer with us) was a banksman at Daw Mill many years ago at a time when there had been a big spate of pilfering from the stores. Bill became prime suspect and eventually the police got involved. Inevitably they decided to pay him a visit at home but when they got there it was his wife who answered the door. "May we come in?" they asked, "Of course" she said, "How can I help you?" The officer in charge said, "We need to speak to your husband about some items that have gone missing from the pit, I'm afraid." "Oh! OK" she said, "He's down the garden in his shed. Hang on a minute and I'll get him on the tannoy..."
