This is a pretty good video on how a modern mine is planned out using longwall retreat mining.

Actually, should probably have started with this one which explains the concepts in surface mining by drill and blast in layman's terms

OK, as our You Tube Educational Channel is growing now, I thought I would share some of these - but whether or not they are "videos" is debatable as they have some interactivity built in. Lets demonstrate this with the latest one posted today - you can click between the buttons on the right to flip between the choices....
[ps John, I have been through some of my old posts as a lot of the links I gave are now broken, I have removed a number of offenders]

Sorry John, I meant some of the older stuff posted had become a bit defunct as we have been completely redoing a lot of our web materials. This meant several of my past posts no longer worked as the links they had embedded in them are no longer there. Thought it better just to remove the posts as otherwise they don't make sense anymore.

Education should be fun too as should science and engineering, I think. So here's science as a bit of entertainment too - or should that be edutainment?.

No probs.... Just to let you know, I rarely remove anything posted here, generally only commercial advertising, as it contravenes the hosts T&C's.

I must be getting old, what educational or entertaining content is in that? Hi tywyn, well... first off, this is a new technology which we are having to educate the mining community about. The first point is therefore to give the industry not only the evidence, but the "feel" for themselves for the type of fragmentation and throw these so called "low explosive" or "nonexplosive" solutions can achieve with very small quantities. The second value is in motivating lectures for engineers. This small video contains a plethora of important engineering concepts in action. These include: combustion, solid mechanics, stress/strain, friction, gas dynamics, classical mechanics [the paths and rotations of the flying pieces]. The third value is in showing school kids what real world applied sciences and experimentation looks like to motivate interests in science and engineering. The fourth value is helping school science teachers join the dots between the text books and engineering in industry. As for entertaining, I guess that is a matter of personal choice, no? I found doing the work very entertaining, making the video a creative process and it still amuses me to watch it.

I must be getting old, what educational or entertaining content is in that? Lets see about a more obvious educational one then. How about this one - a while ago there was a small discussion on open pit bench mining...this one is about something called "stemming" as one of the key elements in that...
