Looks a possibility this Smallmine in Fochriw near Merthyr Tudfil will be re-opening,last worked back in the 90`s,a planning extension was passed early last month. Previously worked with undercutter faces, good coal,Rhondda No.2,around the 2ft 6in mark, Their biggest problem will be finding a workforce.

Blaentillery No.2 had a training face approved ,they had a few hopeful`s,equipped them out, less than a month they jacked, shoveling on to a face conveyor and timbering up did`nt appeal,
Johnson tried to recruit local men, trained on job,No interest.
Angus ,you would be in a minority,if you could cope with the conditions.

I was spoiled when I worked at British Gypsum and Boulby mine, could never have gone back to crawling for a living after that. Anything less than 6 feet was too low after those two mines, then in Oz I worked in 10 to 14 foot workings. To change the lights out on the face I needed an oil drum to stand on...
I recall one face, the shearer automatic speed control had crapped itself, couldn't stop production to change out the power pack, so helped the drivers by sitting on the shearer and operating the manual haulage controls for them..

Tygwyn Newmillerdam was a small drift mine located just off the a61 between wakefield and Barnsley .we we,re working the kent "thick" seam at the time . the seam thickness varied from one side of the pit to the other one side was no more than about 20"thick so we we,re layed on our sides filling and having to "dint" the floor to set the smallest size dowty props to be set. down the other side the seam got to about 5 ft thick

I'll pass on the joke, but it's easy to put a lid and wedges on top of a prop Jim, the only places we used props at Angus Place was on the main roads and gate roads, they were mostly to hang cables from as the roof was bolted. At Wongawilli, roof was bolted and props and bars used..
