I was a young apprentice and was working with Brian "Chippy" Lee on an overtime shift. We were in the electrical workshops making something up for a job we had to complete underground when Mr Dennis Ward the UM in charge walked in. Chippy and Dennis knew each other from outside the pit, so he said "afternoon Dennis how are you?" Call me Mister Ward at the pit please Brian" he said!! Yep always Mister back then or a fiver fine!

A friend of mine was colliery overman and he was Chairman of the Council when I was Leader. He was working on the face when the Undermanager phoned to ask about conditions on the face. (He used to be a drinking buddy of the undermanager) He replied things are very mad near the tail gate, Chris to which the Undermanager replied "Mr. Bland to you when we are at work"
That evening the overman received a call from the undermanager to ask if they were going out for a drink that evening to which he replied " No, Mr. Bland we are not"
