I think Bob Murray and his company are going to be in for a rough time over the next few years. He is under the impression he will be able to start cutting coal in another part of the mine when this dies down. I think the State of Utah is ready to pull his leases under public pressure. I also think MSHA will be under very great pressure to police his other mines and issue stronger citations for serious violations.
My other thoughts are, mine operators should start to drive out to the bounderies of the lease and work outbye after this accident, finishing the lease at the mine entrance/shaft area when the pit is worked out, not the other way around. I know they always start outbye to help offset the large investment of machinery etc to produce maximum profits to that gain. But lessons learned in coal mining have always had someones blood on them to produce the required legislation. Here is a perfect example of why all coal mines should start inbye and work outbye.

Looks like this mine is going to be closed and sealed.

They are now drilling a sixth (final?) hole. Personally I think it is too late, and although I sympathise with the families, going in to recover the bodies would risk too many more lives to be practical.
Time to put the seals on this mine and walk away.

Well, that looks like it!
___________________________________________________ MINE UPDATE: Sixth borehole breaks through, shows only rubble By Mike Gorrell The Salt Lake Tribune Article Last Updated: 08/25/2007 06:55:10 PM MDT
Posted: 6:40 PM- A sixth borehole being drilled into the Crandall Canyon mine in search of six trapped men has broken through to a tunnel filled to the top with rubble. Mine Safety and Health Administration officials said only that the borehole reached the mine before 5 p.m. Colin King, an attorney representing a majority of the trapped miners' families, said the families were told the tunnel was filled to the top with rubble. The borehole had targeted the area where the miners were working when a catastrophic collapse of the mine's walls occurred during the graveyard shift on Aug. 6. "I don't think I have to say what their reaction was," King said of the families' response to the news, which virtually guarantees their loved ones have not survived. Mine co-owner Bob Murray has said the sixth borehole will be the last if it yields no sign of the miners. Mine officials left the meeting with the family without comment to media waiting outside. A news conference has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Previous boreholes were aimed in areas rescuers thought the miners could have fled - and survived with breathable air. But cameras and microphones lowered down the boreholes showed no sign of the missing men: Brandon Phillips, Luis Alonso Hernandez, Don Erickson, Juan Carlos Payan, Kerry Allred and Manuel Sanchez. The families of the Advertisement
miners have urged officials not to give up on the men, and say they must be recovered from the mine - dead or alive.

They are going to drill another hole, that was a change around from what they were saying! Murray has also ceased operation at one of his other mines near by until he deems it safe. Now why didn't he do that at Crandall Canyon before the accident???

MSHA officially called of the search tonight. I personally feel they were killed in the initial mine collapse. I hope so anyway, I hate to think of them lying there waiting for help.
RIP
Linby Lad.

Well, I guess it's all over. I saw the two sons of Kelly Allred on the TV yesterday morning - very sad.
What makes me really angry is the drill location map that John provided the link to. From that map, is there any question that they were pulling pillars? I thought Murray emphatically claimed they were not! Bastard!

MSHA records show that permission to extract pillars was applied for a few months back and was granted by the local MSHA office. They also show at a later date that MSHA was notified that pillar extraction had commenced.
I'd say Mr Murrays soul is well and truly on it's way to a nice hot place when he croaks it!

Utah look like they are going to take over all mine inspections themselves and implement their own mines inspectorate over riding MSHA, which Constitutionally, they are entitled to do.
