Quite an interesting pit was Arkwright. I remember it vaguely as being a drift mine with a shaft. I know, it sounds a contradiction in terms, and I must admit I only ever visited it once, although we had close connections with their Safety Dept. I hope someone has some photos because there is absolutely nothing there now. Shortly after the pit was closed and the stoppings put on everybody who lived in the village (sorry, officially it was known as Arkwright Town) found their cellars full of methane. The pressure had built up behind the stoppings, though not to any great extent, and because it was so near thesurface, the methane simply leeched through the cracked strata. A decision was taken to move the entire village from the south side of the A632 Chesterfield-Bolsover road, to the north side. A new estate was built and all the people moved from the old Arkwright to the new, with the exception of ONE person who refused to sell or move. I believe the house is still there. The entire site was then opencasted in a large operation, and eventually landscaped and grassed over. I still have some friends close by who may be able to give me a little more info, which I will be happy to share when I receiove it.
