There were 183 collieries in South Wales operating on Vesting Day! That's one hell of a big coalfield!

There were also nearly 100 Small Mines in the 1980`s,turning good profits.

Of course not, you`d never be able to spell some of the names, lol
It was just a fact, every mountain where i came from in the mid to upper Swansea Valley had a few Smallmines, and every other mountain outside the area as well.
I have an old newspaper cutting[i`ll have to find]where it states there were 221 Collieries in South Wales alone,if i remember correctly, this was from earlier than vesting day.

When Dad worked at Bestwood workshops he often used to go with the van to Tredegar, (not sure if a workshops or pit or both were there.) He always said how friendly the local blokes were & how good the local scenery was, he even talked about getting a transfer & moving down there, but Mam put the kibosh on that. Not sure if he was still on the trepanner section or if it was after he'd moved to the exploder section (did they use many trepanners in South Wales?)I've been to North Wales a few times but my only experience of South Wales is army exercise's at Sennybridge (never been so cold in my life.) Suppose I ought to get my butt down to South Wales & see the scenery my Dad liked so much..

I know they used a fair few Dobson Double 2 chocks down there, my late Dad used to deliver them from Dobsons factory, plus other hydraulic parts. I sometimes went with him on Saturday after I'd finished nights. I recall the old road before the "Heads of the Valley" road was completed...Boy did that road make a difference.
Don't worry Jim, the list I have were all the ones nationalized in 1947, if there are any spelling errors, blame the NCB..
