I was telling my wife Sue about underground diesel loco's & she asked if any shearers, conveyors, dosco's etc used diesel engines? I laughed & said "of course not!" But she insists in asking, so Sue's question (not mine) is "do or did they?"

I await the scoffing!

Been reading that there are diesel shuttle cars & loaders & in metal mines trucks used underground, so Sue is sort of right. Never heard of owt else underground being diesel powered though..

The two Secoma drill rigs we used at BG had diesel engines for tramming from heading to heading, once they had drilled all the shot holes and been charged and fired, they were mucked out with Wagner diesel Scooptrams, (LHD). Boulby at the beginning used all electric, Secoma single boom drill rigs, Secoma single boom bolters, Joy undercutting machines. But the ore was mucked out with diesel powered Eimco LHD's. Joy produce both diesel shuttlecars and both DC and AC powered shuttle cars, plus a range of battery powered shuttle cars. I never saw diesel powered cutting machines of any sort at the mines I worked at.

Middleton Mines, an underground limestone mine in Derbyshire, had a fire engine and a single deck bus that went into the mine plus a number of land rovers. It was an adit so they could drive straight in. The mine was served by a siding off the Cromford & High Peak railway.

It was an adit so they could drive straight in. The mine was served by a siding off the Cromford & High Peak railway. We used diesel Landrovers U/G at BG, together with a diesel/hydraulic manrider, fitters had two modified tractors for transport and we elecs had one for the same. Boulby had a diesel forklift in pit bottom for moving supplies off the large south side cage in No2 pit bottom, they also had the first of the diesel manriders when I was there. Back to BG, the surveyors had a Landrover that they removed the cab to drive underground on surveying sessions, straight down the belt drift at East Leake.
At Boulby, all diesels had flame traps and scrubbers due to methane problems. BG just had venturi air diluters on the exhaust system, they called them "Olins", tradename of the venturi's.
