Maurice Woodhead. I can't tell you much Maurice but Oakenshaw Colliery was on the North Eastern edge of Heath Common not very far from Walton Colliery looking at the map below (enlarged) I believe that Oakenshaw Colliery was on Oakenshaw Lane at the site that is now shown as Dalkia Utilities Services opposite Oakenshaw Farm. www.overtown.org.uk/about-walton/interactive-map.htm..

do not know too much about oakenshaw when it was a working colliery , but it was where I had my interview and induction test. Also 1969/70 it is where I took my 1st an 2nd year mech, apprenticeship exams. The location of the colliery was reached by approaching from the sharslton and heath common roads, A sharp left just before the old power station on the right and the railway bridge, you followed the lane for 300yards approx sharp right over the railway, and it was on your right hand side.

I'm new to this Forum, but I do know a little bit about Oakenshaw Colliery on Heath Common, Wakefield. My Dad was a collier (shotfirer I think) there, and also was a First Aid and Rescue man with the St John's Ambulance Brigade. His name was Denis Ryan, we lived on Regent St Belle Vue. Before Oakenshaw, Dad worked at Park Hill, and before that a mine in South Yorkshire. Mum sometimes took me to Oakenshaw to meet him off his shift. Sometimes I saw the miners handing over their cigs before they went in the cage. I remember he was very upset when his friend Paddy McDarby died underground of a heart attack. He took us to a Miners Parade in Normanton, I remember the colourful banners. One day there was some kind of accident, a manager came to the house & took Dad to help in a rescue. I remember a man coming to the house to teach my Dad for his under-manager exam, I think his name was Phil Grant. Before Dad could take the exam he was diagnosed with pneumoconiosis and silicosis. Dad died in 1974, one day after Mum. I now live in Florida, visit England and Ireland every year. I have great respect for all miners, God bless you all. Oakenshaw location.txt (208 B)
