Isn't Hatfield on care and maintenance and soon to be closed due to no interest??

I believe Hatfield is still turning coal, it's got enough money to keep going until next year.

I remember before the election that Mr Miliband was asked what help Labour would give the mines if they won the election, his reply was that there was very little that Labour could do to help. Shame he wasn't concerned more about his constituents before the election.
Politics aside it would be a great shame if Hatfield closed, a lot of coal to the east still to be worked. One day we will need coal again, our energy policy is a complete shambles!! I was only reading today that the Germans are scrapping carbon levies on coal to keep open mines and coal power stations running as they have a looming energy crisis.

I believe its the Lignite opencast`s that Germany is preserving ,the remaining deep mines are still due to close shortly.

I believe that Germany's deep mines are not due to close until 2018, not a long time in the life of a colliery, but plenty of time for political reversal if it suits requirements at the time.

Lignite is the dirtiest coal you can get. While the UK has doubled the carbon levy this year Germany has cancelled it. With coal power stations closing in the UK because of the carbon levy, our energy security is wafer thin. Germany on the other hand appreciates that renewables are not perfect, that is why they are sticking with coal.
Coal from Kellingley, Thoresby and Hatfield is being replaced by imported coal. It is said that in 10 years time there will only be one coal power station in the UK. I don't know if gas will replace coal as certainly renewables can't.

Sad news indeed,no market for their coal,
Them wood chips from the US must be coming in very cheap.

I wonder how much bunker or diesel oil those ships bringing across the woodchips use, & how much pollution they cause? Bet they wont tell us..

Ships only use diesel when departing or arriving at ports, at sea they use heavy oil, a virtual waste product of oil refining, it's very cheap but produces a lot of smoke, hence the ban on using it when docking. I found this out when the wife and I sailed on a modern container ship from Australia to the states a number of years back. Those engines are huge too.
Regarding the wood chips, why would they use wood chips in power generation?? I'd imagine coal would be far superior as the heat source.
I know the chips are a waste product of wood products, but usually they are pelleted for the domestic heating market over here. Previous to that, saw mills and wood product companies burned the waste.

The wood chips in question come from the South East of you John,Louisiana and Carolina to supply Drax.

The wood chips in question come from the South East of you John,Louisiana and Carolina to supply Drax. Chipped wood left over from rail road ties Jim, large sawmills have piles of the "raw" products sitting outside, they used to burn it off, but EPA rules stopped that practice, so now its sold to wood chipping companies. The better quality waste goes into chip board and OSB products, then the "waste" waste, for want of a better name, goes into wood pellets for domestic heaters, and the rest for power station feed stock.

It is being said on some Facebook sites that coaling stopped last night, stoppings are being put in place this week and shaft filling will commence on Friday! If true then that has got to be one of the shortest closures in history!!

. When we went on a cruise from Miami to Bahamas & back they showed us some bunker oil, it looked like black sludge & smelt yuk. They mentioned about the ports getting upset about the exhaust smoke so used diesel near the American coast. She didn't mention the Bahamas coast though, so maybe their not so strict..
