North Notts has been declared the earthquake capital of the UK, they've had dozens of baby earthquakes round the New Ollerton area. They blame them on mining, I presume from old gobs collapsing. Last time I felt an earthquake was the Market Rasen (5.2) one in feb 2008, the bed was banging from side to side & Tiddles the cat jumped about two feet in the air hissing & spitting as though it was my fault, we didn't have any damage though just a stressed out cat..

From what I gather, Manchester get's it's fair share too, probably old workings collapsing and faults moving because the stress zones have moved so much with all the mining that took place.

Nothing to do with coal or other mining, the area is littered with faults and defects, particularly up the Trent Valley from London to Eastwood.
If you look at the topography on a 3D map you can see this better Eastwood, Heanor, Ilkeston are on the tops of hills, so are Codnor and Ripley. You can follow this by looking at ordinary maps and noting the names, Golden Valley is as its name a valley, and it is this area falling towards Leicestershire which allowed massive ground movement along several geological locks which allow North Notts to move.
