What diameter were the Advance boring drills and Methane Drainage drills used with the NCB? I`m assuming they were a larger diameter than the normal coal drill.

I never saw advanced or methane drainage drilling with the NCB, I did see exploritory drilling from the Piper seam to the lower seams, they were done by the NCB drilling teams from Area. They used a miniature drill rig but standard diameter drill pipes, whatever they were called, for core samples.
We did have long hole horizontal bores drilled at Boulby that went around 1.25Km ahead at several drill bay areas underground, again, standard drill pipes.. Boart Drilling carried those out when I was there until around 1977/8 when our blokes were trained in the process and took over doing the test bores.

I found some of my old notes and wondered if they were worth posting, anyway for what it's worth here they are. My Methane Drainage Notes. Holes 10 to 25 yard intervals. Parallel to face. 45 to 50 degree angle. (60 degree angle at Shirebrook). 100 to 200 feet over waste. Diameter four and a half inch for stand pipe (20 to 30 feet). Rest of hole two and a half inch. Drill through safety device ------ to seal off. Water traps drain cock. Flexible pipe ------ between borehole and main range. No firedamp range in intake shaft or intake surface drift. Valves ------- yellow. Pipe ends ---------- yellow bands. Pipes clear of electrical cables. Discharge underground. Minimum 25% or exhauster stopped. Free of flammable material. Diffuser at discharge end. 2% maximum at fence. Discharge only in return airways. Surface discharge. Flametraps fitted or if into a utilisation plant ---- 40% minimum concentration. Exemption Surface. Burn methane down to 30%. Bill.

Thanks Bill, I presume the same 2 1/2in drills would be used for advance boring, when threat of flooding workings are beyond safety barriers.
Are there any UK stockists of these 2 1/2in coal auger drills available anymore?
